The Town Hall of Tomares has arranged a bus trip to Almonte so that residents can experience the 'Arrival of the Virgin of Rocío in Almonte', an event that recurs every seven years and which in 2026 will once again fill the streets of the Huelva town with devotion.
The bus will depart at 5:00 in the morning on Thursday, August 20 from the Peña Cultural Flamenca de Tomares (José Monge Cruz 'Camarón de la Isla' street, s/n). The return is scheduled for 1:00 PM from Almonte.
The ticket price is 5 euros and places are limited. Interested parties can purchase them at the Cultural Centre Tomás de Ybarra (Concepción Ybarra street, 1), from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
The 'Arrival' involves the transfer of the Virgin of Rocío from her Sanctuary to the Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption in Almonte, where she will remain for nine months before returning to her hermitage in May 2027. The route, known as the 'Camino de los Llanos', gathers thousands of faithful each time it is celebrated.
This tradition dates back to 1949, when the Virgin began visiting Almonte every seven years so that residents could have their patroness close by. Before that date, she was only moved in exceptional situations such as illnesses, wars, or famine.
The 'Arrival' coincides with the 'Rocío Chico', celebrated every year between August 16 and 19 and culminating in the Function of the Vote, in memory of the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. For the residents of Tomares, this is a unique opportunity to participate in one of the most significant religious events in Andalusia without having to travel on their own.
