The La Rinconada Town Hall, alongside the association Más de 1001 sonrisas, installs approved pictograms at pedestrian crossings near schools to facilitate cognitive accessibility for individuals with ASD.
The Town Hall of La Rinconada, through its Public Infrastructures department, has begun painting approved pictograms at pedestrian crossings located near the schools in the municipality. This measure coincides with the start of the school year and aims to improve road safety for young children, as well as facilitate cognitive accessibility for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
The delegate for Primary Education and Public Infrastructures, Rafael Reyes, supervised the work at the crossings near CEIP Blanca de los Ríos, where he witnessed the progress of the initiative and shared details with the school's management team. Also present during the visit was Rosa Rodríguez Olmedo, president of the local association Más de 1001 sonrisas, which collaborates on the initiative.
The initiative involves painting a sequence of blue pictograms on the first stripe of the pedestrian crossing. The drawings, four in total, represent the actions Stop, Look, Car Stopped, and Cross, so that children can easily understand how to use the crossing. According to the Town Hall, this visual support not only benefits individuals with autism but also helps children and adults understand the function of these spaces.
"We want something as everyday as crossing the street to be easier, safer, and more understandable for all children," expressed Reyes. "Because moving towards inclusive education also means making our environment inclusive."
The delegate also highlighted that such measures strengthen collaboration between the Town Hall and the local associative fabric. The president of Más de 1001 sonrisas positively assessed the initiative, which is part of actions for the inclusion of individuals with ASD in the municipality.
The work is being carried out in the school environments of La Rinconada and will continue in the coming days. The Town Hall has not specified the total number of crossings to be adapted or the budget for the initiative, although municipal sources indicate that the measure will extend to other schools in the municipality.
