The mayor of Estepa, Antonio Jesús Muñoz, received this week the members of the Sierra Sur Boxing Club, highlighting their sporting successes and their social work with young people and women.
The mayor of Estepa, Antonio Jesús Muñoz, welcomed the representatives of the Sierra Sur Boxing Club at the Town Hall, in an event that served to highlight both the sporting achievements of the entity and its social work in the locality. During the meeting, the mayor especially congratulated José Gamito, known as 'El Diamante', who last April was crowned Latino Champion of the World Boxing Council (WBC) after defeating Venezuelan Gilbert González in Herrera, his hometown.
Gamito, originally from Herrera but closely linked to the Estepeño club, has a record of ten fights and ten victories, remaining undefeated. In addition to his Latino title, he has been the champion of Extremadura. At the reception, the mayor was able to hold the belt that certifies Gamito as champion, a symbol of the effort and perseverance that, as he highlighted, brings the name of the region to the highest levels of international boxing.
Alongside the champion were María Rodríguez, Juan José Rodríguez, and Abraham Rodríguez, members of the club's board. María is responsible for logistics and administration, while Abraham and Juan José serve as coaches and physical trainers; the latter also competes as an amateur boxer. The mayor was informed about the club's journey, which began in 2019 under the guidance of Brian Colmenares and is now managed by this group of young entrepreneurs.
Antonio Jesús Muñoz emphasised the work that the club does with the youngest. As he explained, boxing is used as a tool to instil values such as respect, effort, discipline, and personal improvement. This work is particularly relevant for children who face integration difficulties, helping them to strengthen their self-esteem and confidence through sports practice.
The mayor also highlighted the growth of women's boxing in Estepa. More and more women are coming to the gym to start in this sport, breaking stereotypes and demonstrating that boxing is a discipline open to everyone. For Muñoz, this fact is a source of satisfaction and reflects the social change that the club promotes.
The Sierra Sur Boxing Club is entering a new phase. After a year and a half in their facilities in the Sierra Sur Industrial Estate, next August they will move their headquarters to a new, larger space with better conditions. The entity will resume its activities in September with completely renovated facilities, which will allow them to offer a more comprehensive service to their athletes.
The mayor reiterated the commitment of the Estepa Town Hall to continue supporting the club through the Sports Department, both for its sporting excellence and its educational and social function. The meeting concluded with a group photo alongside Gamito's trophies and awards, in a symbolic gesture of municipal support for an entity that has become a benchmark in the region.
