The Swedish multinational has begun searching for properties across Spain to open 15 compact stores between 2027 and 2030. Seville, with over 100,000 inhabitants, meets the requirements to host one of these establishments.
IKEA has launched an expansion plan in Spain that includes the opening of 15 compact format stores in the next four years, and the company has already started scouting locations. The capital of Seville, with over 100,000 inhabitants, fits the profile of city that the Swedish firm is looking for, although there is still no official confirmation on the chosen locations.
The planned investment amounts to 50 million euros, and each store will generate an average of 35 direct jobs, which would mean around 515 jobs in total. The announcement has sparked interest from owners of shopping centres and business parks in the province, who can now submit their applications through the email provided by the company.
What IKEA is looking for in Seville and its province
The requirements to host one of these compact stores are very specific. The premises must have an area of between 2,000 and 4,000 square metres, distributed over a single floor, and be located in a commercial park on the outskirts of a city with more than 100,000 inhabitants. Additionally, it must have a loading area and be ready for immediate occupancy.
In the metropolitan area of Seville, municipalities such as Dos Hermanas, Alcalá de Guadaíra, or the capital itself meet these conditions. The company has opened a search process across Spain, but sources in the real estate sector point out that the Andalusian capital is a natural candidate due to its population density and commercial fabric.
A format that is already successful in other Spanish cities
IKEA has been implementing this model since 2023, with openings in Granada, Torrejón, Leganés, Vitoria, and Girona. These compact stores offer a similar experience to large surfaces but in a more reduced space. Customers can immediately purchase around 2,000 products and have access to planning, food, and flexible delivery services.
For the residents of Seville, the arrival of a compact store would mean a saving in time and travel. Currently, the only IKEA store in the province is located in the municipality of San Juan de Aznalfarache, in Aljarafe, and the new location could be closer to areas such as the capital or the Los Alcores region.
A commitment to omnichannel and proximity
The Expansion Director of IKEA, Andreas Berg, explained that this initiative aims to accelerate growth at a lower cost while simultaneously lowering product prices. “It is a global development initiative with the ambition to transform the way we expand more quickly and at a lower cost,” he stated.
“It is a global development initiative with the ambition to transform the way we expand more quickly and at a lower cost by creating new ways of working and scalable solutions, thus being able to continue lowering the prices of our products, which is our ultimate goal to meet our customers' needs,” says Andreas Berg.
The company will combine its knowledge in home equipment with the intelligent use of data to offer personalised shopping experiences, both in physical stores and digital channels. The IKEA app and website already facilitate product searches, project planning, and services such as delivery, assembly, and financing.
Property owners interested can send their proposals to the email ikea.expansion.es@ingka.ikea.com. The deadline is not closed, but the company expects the first openings of the new plan to begin in the fiscal year 2027. For the people of Seville, the wait may be worth it: if IKEA chooses the city, the new compact store will be operational within one to three years.
