The town of Mairena del Alcor will host the 65th edition of the Festival de Cante Jondo Antonio Mairena from September 1 to 5, featuring a stellar lineup led by José Mercé, Farruquito, and La Macanita. The event will pay tribute to the singer Diego Clavel.

Mairena del Alcor is already gearing up for one of the most prominent flamenco events in Andalusia. The 65th edition of the Festival de Cante Jondo Antonio Mairena, which will take place from September 1 to 5, was presented this Thursday in the Sala de las Pilastras of the Casa Palacio de los Duques de Arcos, with a lineup that includes figures such as José Mercé, Farruquito, La Macanita, and Rocío Luna.

The event was attended by the town's mayor, Juanma López, and the acting Minister of Culture and Sport, Patricia del Pozo, who unveiled the promotional poster, created by the painter Juan Valdés. The mayor explained that the image "does not paint flamenco, it paints its soul."

Tribute to Diego Clavel and parallel activities

This year's festival will have a special remembrance for the singer Diego Clavel, to whom the inaugural conference "Diego Clavel: ethics and aesthetics" will be dedicated on September 1. On the same day, the recital by Rubito de Pará and guitarist Antonio Carrión will provide the musical note.

On September 2, the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía will perform "Flamenco Patrimonio" at the Municipal Theatre Calixto Sánchez. The day of September 3 will be dedicated to training, with a free dance masterclass led by Alejandro Rodríguez, and a meeting between Romerito de Jerez and Juan Garrido, culminating in a performance by guitarist Diego del Morao.

Additionally, the Chair of Flamenco at Pablo de Olavide University will temporarily move its activities to Mairena del Alcor during the festival days, with the meeting "Romerito de Jerez, almost a century of flamenco testimony."

The grand gala on Saturday, September 5

The highlight will come on Saturday, September 5, at the Municipal Auditorium Manuel Mairena. On stage will be José Mercé, La Macanita, Juan de Mairena, and Rocío Luna, accompanied by guitarists Antonio Higuero, Manuel Valencia, Francis Gómez, and Benito Bernal.

The grand finale will be provided by the dancer Juan Manuel Fernández Montoya "Farruquito", who will perform alongside the voices of Ismael de la Rosa "Bola", Manuel de la Nina, and Mari Vizárraga, with Manuel Valencia on guitar and Paco Vega on percussion.

For the residents of Mairena del Alcor and nearby municipalities, this event represents a unique opportunity to enjoy flamenco in its purest form without leaving the Los Alcores region. The festival, which is celebrating its 65th anniversary, has established itself as a benchmark that attracts enthusiasts from all over Andalusia.

Tickets available from August 3

Tickets for the various activities will go on sale starting August 3, both online and at the box office. Prices will range from 10 to 20 euros, with passes available for multiple activities. An opportunity to immerse oneself in the duende and the quejío that define the legacy of Antonio Mairena.
