The Andalusian cotton sector has an appointment on September 30 in Lebrija. The Sevillian town will host the thirteenth edition of Expoalgodón, a field day where technicians and farmers can learn firsthand about the results of the trials conducted in an experimental plot.
The event is sponsored by Certis Belchim, Guadalsem, FMC, and ENTEC, companies specialized in solutions for cotton. The Ministry of Agriculture collaborates through IFAPA, the Official College of Technical Agricultural Engineers and Graduates in Agricultural Engineering of Western Andalusia (COITAND), and the City Council of Lebrija.
The cotton campaign in Andalusia is reaching its final stretch with 45,700 hectares planted. According to sector data, the plots are in good condition, with satisfactory development, high yield potential, and a relatively low incidence of pests, allowing for a positive outlook for the harvest.
These results are particularly significant in a context where the area dedicated to cotton continues to decline year after year. For this reason, Expoalgodón remains a tool to optimize the crop and provide visibility to farmers, technicians, and companies in the value chain.
Cotton continues to be a strategic crop for Andalusia, especially for the Bajo Guadalquivir. Its future depends on improving competitiveness, profitability, and adaptation to new production conditions.
“Events like Expoalgodón allow for the sharing of experiences, showcasing the advances being made, and generating a meeting space for the entire sector,” according to the event's organization.
The plot in Lebrija once again becomes a testing ground dedicated to research, development, and innovation to improve the sustainability and profitability of the crop. Participating companies will present their innovations.
Guadalsem will showcase its current commercial varieties and new varietal lines resulting from its R&D efforts, some of which may soon be added to its catalogue. The company is working to obtain varieties adapted to current agro-climatic conditions and the needs of farmers, combining productivity and quality.
Certis Belchim, dedicated to crop protection, will present Soleto (metobromuron 50%), a pre-emergence herbicide for controlling dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous weeds. The company will also introduce well-known solutions such as Teppeki, an aphicide against aphids that is safe for beneficial fauna; Mospilan (acetamiprid), an insecticide for pest control; Shirudo, the only acaricide registered for cotton; and Gozai, a fast-acting defoliant registered in Integrated Production.
FMC Agricultural Solutions will present its comprehensive programme to maximize the crop's potential from planting to harvest. Highlights include Coragen 20SC, a reference for controlling lepidopterans, and Rivet 24EC, based on carfentrazone-ethyl, which increases capsule opening, accelerates maturation, improves defoliation, and reduces regrowth, facilitating more efficient harvesting and higher fibre quality.
ENTEC will focus on fertilization and efficient nutrient management. In a context where the Royal Decree on Sustainable Nutrition promotes the planning and efficient use of fertilizers, the company will demonstrate how different fertilization strategies impact the development and production of the crop. The Enhanced Efficiency Fertilizer technology allows for optimized nitrogen utilization and advances towards producing more with less, in a profitable and sustainable manner.
