The mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, inaugurates a commemorative tile for the centenary of the original Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, blessed on June 6, 1926. The City Council also announces the transfer of a 300 square metre plot to the Brotherhood for its Social Work.
The mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, presided over the inauguration of a commemorative tile for the centenary of the original Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows of Cerro del Águila on Monday, an event with which the City Council aims to fix in the memory of the neighbourhood the place where it all began. On June 6, 1926, the Cardinal Archbishop of Seville, Eustaquio Ilundáin y Esteban, blessed that small temple located on the current Avenida de Hytasa, known by locals as "La Capillita".
For 27 years, that chapel was the only temple in Cerro del Águila, until the current temple of Our Lady of Sorrows was completed in 1953. Sanz recalled that it was not just a provisional seat, but the meeting point for the first inhabitants of the neighbourhood.
"For 27 years it was the only temple in the neighbourhood and was, above all, a place around which a community began to grow and organise"
The mayor highlighted the role of the chapel as a space for coexistence for generations of residents and defended the installation of the tile as a way to preserve the memory of the neighbourhoods. "We want this tile to serve so that anyone passing by here in ten, fifty, or a hundred years can stop, read it, and know that in this place stood the first church of Cerro del Águila," he stated.
The event also served to announce a municipal commitment to the social work of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Sorrows. Sanz explained that the City Council is moving forward to make available to the corporation a municipal plot of about 300 square metres, located on the streets Dante and Tarragona, currently unused, where the Brotherhood can develop its facilities for the Social Work.
"It is a project of general interest for the neighbourhood and for Seville, and we want to continue working alongside the Brotherhood to make it a reality once all the administrative procedures are completed"
The mayor emphasised that supporting entities that work directly with residents is part of building the city. The transfer of the plot is pending administrative procedures, with no timeline yet established for its completion.
