The Junta de Andalucía will digitise over 2,800 documents and photographs from the personal archive of Jorge Bonsor, deposited in Mairena del Alcor. The project will culminate in 2030, coinciding with the centenary of his death.

The Archivo General de Andalucía will digitise and make public the personal collection of the archaeologist and Hispanist Jorge Bonsor (Lille, 1855 - Mairena del Alcor, 1930). The Minister of Culture, Historical Heritage and Sport, Patricia del Pozo, presented the initiative at the Teatro Municipal Calixto Sánchez in Mairena del Alcor, where the documentary Bonsor, directed by Cristina Rosado, was also screened.

The archive consists of 18 documentary bundles and field diaries, 1,700 photographs (including 450 glass plates), 500 maps, plans and technical drawings, 400 books and specialised publications, 220 postcards, and 15 engraved plates. This material documents the excavations that Bonsor directed in the provinces of Sevilla, Cádiz, and Huelva.

The complete digitisation will allow remote access to the collection and is scheduled for 2030, the year marking the centenary of the researcher’s death. Until then, the originals remain accessible in person for researchers at the Archivo General de Andalucía.

At the event, Del Pozo was accompanied by the Government Delegate of the Junta in Sevilla, Ricardo Sánchez, and the mayor of Mairena del Alcor, Juanma López. The minister highlighted Bonsor's role in the protection of Andalusian heritage and his working method, which replaced the collecting of the time with technical drawing, photographic recording, and field diaries.

The digitisation is part of the centenary programming and aims to bring Bonsor's figure closer to the residents of Mairena del Alcor, the municipality where he lived and where his legacy is preserved. The presented documentary reviews his career and will be shown at the municipal theatre.
