The Plenary of the Sanlúcar la Mayor City Council unanimously approved an institutional declaration opposing the proposed biogas plant in Benacazón, in defence of the health and environment of the Aljarafe.
The Sanlúcar la Mayor City Council has unanimously approved an Institutional Declaration rejecting the biogas plant that is planned to be installed near the municipality, in the area of Benacazón. All political groups represented in the Corporation, as well as the non-affiliated councillor, supported the text presented at the Plenary held yesterday.
The initiative, which aims to protect the health of residents and the natural environment of the Aljarafe, was defended by the Environmental delegate, Álvaro García (PSOE), who emphasised the need to study such projects with the utmost rigor. García called on the Junta de Andalucía not to authorise any actions that compromise the region or that have the majority rejection of its inhabitants.
During the debate, Aurelio Vargas, from the Sanluqueño Independent Group, pointed out that "the health and quality of life of people is at stake," and thanked the initiative presented. For his part, Vicente Terenti, spokesperson for Izquierda Unida Sanlúcar Avanza, expressed his group's support and his hope that this defence of the municipality would be a shared cause among the entire Corporation, recognising the work of the citizens' platform.
Antonio Salado, from Vox, stated that any decision must be made with balance and common sense, ensuring that the life and well-being of residents are not put at risk. The councillor from the PP, Pilar Moreno, affirmed that her group fully supports the declaration, considering that the biogas plant poses a threat to Sanlúcar la Mayor, the surrounding municipalities, the green corridor, and environmentally valuable spaces such as Doñana. The non-affiliated councillor, Flori Barrera, also supported the initiative, emphasising that the priority is to protect health, the environment, and quality of life.
The mayor, Raúl Castilla, thanked for the consensus reached and announced his intention to convene a meeting with all municipal spokespersons along with the citizens' platform to gain a deeper understanding of the project details and continue raising institutional awareness. He also called for unity among all municipalities in the Aljarafe to prevent the territory from hosting high-impact projects that do not respond to a truly sustainable model. "We want sustainable industries and to protect our environmental treasure. In this case, size matters: we are talking about a biogas plant that does not respond to a circular economy model and cannot be considered sustainable," he stated.
Citizen mobilization continues. Today, Thursday, July 30, there will be a gathering in Bollullos de la Mitación to show community opposition to the project and demand that it does not proceed. The mayor encouraged the entire Municipal Corporation and the citizens to participate in this mobilization in defence of the Aljarafe and its future.
The biogas plant, which is still in the processing phase, has generated strong opposition in several municipalities of the Aljarafe, which see it as a risk to health and the environment. Sanlúcar la Mayor thus joins other towns that have already shown their opposition, in a common front that seeks to halt the project.
