Dozens of locals gathered at the Parque de las Marismas to watch Spain vs Cape Verde on a giant screen. The event, organised by Interporc and the Town Hall, distributed ham sandwiches among attendees.

The Parque de las Marismas in Los Palacios and Villafranca became the epicentre of World Cup fervour this Monday. Dozens of locals, many wearing the Spanish national team jersey, watched Spain's debut against Cape Verde on a giant screen, which ended in a goalless draw. The main attraction: seeing two local footballers, Gavi and Fabián Ruiz, starting in Luis de la Fuente's eleven.

An Afternoon of Football and Ham

The initiative was made possible thanks to the collaboration between Interporc, the Interprofessional Agro-Food Organisation of White Coated Pork, and the Sports Delegation of the Town Hall. During the match, free ham sandwiches were distributed among attendees, promoting healthy eating and the local agro-food sector.

The municipal sports delegate, Chari Parejo, highlighted the pride it brings to the municipality to have two local players in the national team's starting eleven at a World Cup. “Seeing Gavi and Fabián wearing the Spain jersey is a joy for all the locals,” she stated. Parejo was accompanied by Agustín Ríos, National Promotion Manager of Interporc.

“We want to highlight rural areas, promote healthy lifestyles through foods like ham, and encourage sports practice,” explained Ríos, who did not rule out repeating the experience if Spain progresses in the tournament.

Festive Atmosphere Despite the Draw

The goalless draw did not dampen the festive atmosphere. Children, young people, and adults shared the excitement of following the match and cheering for their local idols. Many wore the red jersey of the national team and chanted supportive songs throughout the 90 minutes.

The event once again demonstrated the support of Los Palacios and Villafranca for their two football stars. Gavi and Fabián Ruiz, who developed in the youth categories of the local club, are now sporting icons for the entire municipality. “It’s a pride for the world to see two locals on the biggest stage in football,” commented a resident while enjoying his sandwich.

An Encouraging Starting Point

Although the result was not as hoped, the debut left positive feelings. Spain dominated the match but failed to convert their chances. Gavi, tireless in midfield, and Fabián, with his usual distribution skills, were among the standout players. The national team now has two decisive matches ahead to secure a place in the knockout stage.

For Los Palacios, this Monday's event was not just a football match, but a day of community around the sport and the values represented by the national team. “Hopefully we can repeat this in the upcoming matches,” wished Ríos. For now, the municipality dreams of seeing its two prodigal sons shine in the World Cup.

Next match: Spain will face Brazil next Friday at 21:00 hours. The Town Hall is considering repeating the event if the team continues to advance.
